Global Chic Guest Bathroom - ORC Week 4

The last four weeks of the One Room Challenge have just flown by! There are only 2 weeks left to go before everyone’s BIG room reveals! I’ve really been enjoying visiting the other guest participants and featured designers blogs and social media to see their work in progress. This week I traveled back and forth to The Home Depot FIVE times for paint! It all started with the first gray wall color which was too light then the second gray color was a little darker but I didn’t like the way it looked next to the wallpaper so then I chose a totally different wall color... PEACH. 🍑 That choice kinda came out of nowhere but the room seems much warmer and cozier. So because of the wall color change, I decided to switch out the shower curtain for a different one that included more colors in it to break up all the peach/orange hues going on.

Then I came across a huge issue with the “Vintage Coral” cabinet paint I had planned on using. Turns out that not every Behr color formula is compatible with the Behr Alkyd Enamel paint. Who knew? 🤷🏼‍♀️ The employee tried to color match the swatch but when I applied it to the cabinets, it looked way more like a pinkish coral instead of orangey coral like it appears on the swatch. So I decided to go one paint swatch shade darker and try out “Aloe Blossom” but now it looks 👀 BRIGHT orange! I’m kinda at a stand still because I feel bad 😔 about continuously changing the paint color but I’m still not satisfied. I haven’t decided what to do yet and I’m getting really frustrated. I’m starting to think that the skylight is pouring tons of natural light in the room and all the colors appear way more intense. Or I’ve just lost my magical ability to pick the perfect paint colors. 😭 🎨

If all that wasn’t enough to think about, I am also second guessing the light fixture and considering one with a more simple modern style. This weeks progress has kinda been like a yo-yo... forwards then backwards, then forwards again then backwards again. I’m running out of time and I need a designer fairy to come wave her magic wand. 🧚🏻‍♀️✨

Global Chic Guest Bathroom - ORC Week 3

It is Week 3 of the One Room Challenge which means the Guest Participants and Featured Designers are all officially at the halfway point! Not really sure if I’m excited or terrified? I must confess I thought I would be much further along with my Global Chic Guest Bathroom makeover but progress has been moving very slowly. I’m hoping this week I can catch up on everything super fast and surprise everyone including myself. Lol. Unfortunately I did not have time to install the shower tile yet because my hubby, the tile cutter, was busy this weekend at Volleyball games. I also was busy decorating my exterior for Halloween because my kiddos were disappointed that our porch had “cute” decorations instead of “spooky”. I guess they are just getting older and like different things now. ☹️ I also had to add to project list because when we took the large mirror Dow there was ugly khaki paint behind it and of course when I checked my old paint can, there wasn’t enough paint and it was unusable. So then I had to make time to re-paint all the walls as well.

Global Chic Guest Bathroom - ORC Week 2

It’s WEEK 2 of the One Room Challenge and I have spent lots of time tweaking my Design Plan and shopping til’ I drop! Last week I went from one store to another store so that I didn’t have to purchase too many things online. I visited Target, Home Depot, HomeGoods, TJMaxx, Marshalls, Lowe’s, Menards, Walmart, etc. to try and find items that are available in-stock. You might think this is a little strange but I don’t care for shopping online. I prefer to actually touch and examine the quality of a product up close in person at the store. I don’t like waiting for shipping or the additional cost of shipping and I definitely don’t want to have to figure out how to return it if it is damaged or I just change my mind. Plus in my opinion, shopping is very enjoyable and I get excited when I find exactly what I’m looking for! As it turns out, I got pretty lucky because so far I only have to order the floor paint and hardware.
Here are some of the items I found on my SHOPPING trips...

FEATURE WALL...

If you watched my insta stories on INSTAGRAM ( @thecreativeorchard ) the other day, you know that I found this gorgeous faux grasscloth peel n' stick wallpaper by SCOTT LIVING @ Lowes. It is exactly what I had in mind for my feature accent wall to make my neutral artwork POP! The weight of the paper is heavy and thick so I think it will install really easily, especially since this is my first time putting up wallpaper of any kind. Not to mention there is no pattern to line up! Yay! You can actually feel the bumpy texture and there are multiple warm brick, peach and coral colors scattered throughout that add lots of depth and interest. So glad I found this! It was a very happy shopping accident. Look out for more SNEAK PEEK videos and pics on INSTAGRAM! (@thecreativeorchard

WORK IN PROGRESS...

Since most of my shopping is already done except two online items, this week I am finally going to start physically working on the GUEST BATHROOM. The kids are off school on Monday so most of my work will get done while they are at school the other four days this week. I will be installing the white ceramic penny tile above the existing shower as an additional splash guard. On INSTAGRAM I posted a poll to see how many viewers would choose WHITE or GRAY grout and 70% VOTED for GRAY so that's what I'm going to use. THANKS to all of you who VOTED! It's always fun to have other peoples input. The GRAY grout color will match the GRAY floor paint and should go good together. The current cabinets are staying so they will get painted with the same Behr Alkyd Enamel Paint from The Home Depot which I also used on my kitchen cabinets during the previous ORC/Spring 2019 but this time the color is called "VINTAGE CORAL" found in the Behr Marquee PAINT SWATCH section. I am relieved to report that the cabinetry paint has held up really well with no chipping, staining or scratches and washes very nicely. So I can officially RECOMMEND the Behr Alkyd Paint! If the weather stays nice, I plan on using flat black Rustoleum spray paint on a couple items such as the rusty metal vent cover and a metal garden stool I already owned. There needs to be more matte black objects to tie in with the black framed mirror and black accents on the light fixture. Most of the other metal surfaces in the room are chrome so that's why I specifically chose a vanity lighting that included both matte black and chrome finishes to have a little bit of a mix. Sometime during the weekend, hopefully my hubby will get more involved and we can cut holes out of the wood countertop for the sinks and faucets. I guess it's time to get my butt in gear! Wish me luck!

Global Chic Guest Bathroom - ORC Week 1

Can you believe that this is actually the third time I have been a Guest Participant in the One Room Challenge ? You would think I would be an expert at doing this by now but I’m not. Every time I work on a big project in my house, I learn way more than before because each room design is so different and I keep trying to challenge my skills by choosing DIY projects that I haven’t tried in the past. If you haven’t figured it out by now, I really enjoy participating in the ORC because it makes me feel motivated and connected to the other Featured Designers/Guest Participants. It’s as if we’re all in this together and have the same goal of completely finishing a room in our home. I am constantly decorating and doing small projects here and there but when I’m not joining this Design Challenge, I usually don’t feel like a room is done, it seems like everything is a never ending work in progress which then leaves me feeling very unsatisfied and frustrated. When I walk into the two rooms I did previously for the ORC, I feel very proud, happy, content and fulfilled about what I had accomplished. So let’s get ready to do this again! During the next 6 weeks I am super excited to be giving my boring “builder grade” GUEST BATHROOM a makeover!

To learn more information about the ORC, to register as a Guest Participant, or to check out the other participants/designers room transformations, visit oneroomchallenge.com . You can also follow the ORC on Instagram @oneroomchallenge #oneroomchallenge #bhgorc.

For the last 13 years, the only thing I have done to this room is paint the walls once and switched out the shower curtain many times. That’s pretty sad for a designer! I’m starting to feel bad for my kids and guests who have to use a bathroom that is just soooooo boring and blah especially since I’ve worked so hard making most of the other rooms so pretty. This room started out with tan walls, cream countertops, white toilet, gigantic wall mirror, cheap leaky faucets, ugly lighting, cinnamon maple wood cabinets and beige ceramic tile. The leftover beige ceramic tile was also used around my fireplace, yuck! The only thing I like about this bathroom is the large room size and bright skylight. For some reason the builder made the guest bathroom way larger than the master bathroom which has secretly annoyed me for years. Here is the “BEFORE” picture of the guest BATHROOM...

Now let’s get to the fun part, the DESIGN PLAN! Lately I have been very INSPIRED by the places I travel to on family vacations such as Puerto Rico, Mexico, Grand Caymans, Dominican Republic, Jamaica, Bahamas, etc. I love all the vibrant paint colors, intricate textiles, rustic woods, luscious greenery and exotic wildlife. So I’m calling the style inspiration for this space, Global Chic with Bohemian touches of course! Below is my INSPIRATION BOARD so you can start to visualize what I have in mind...

INSPIRATION BOARD:

DESIGN PLAN:

WALLS - Light Gray Paint (touching up existing paint) and maybe a Wallpaper Accent Wall
FLOORS - Gray Paint with White Patterned Stencils
